Every law firm should know how their legal services should be packaged, priced and sold to clients and how the firm compensation system can be improved. The clients should be conveyed the message that the law firm does not sell an attorney’s time alone, instead they are selling their legal expertise and knowledge which is valued much above the time spend for each client. Attorneys may charge clients on a contingency basis, on an hourly basis or on a fixed fee basis. The client should be briefed on how they may be charged and an agreement entered into for same; better known as a retainer agreement. All negotiations on fees should essentially be concluded at the beginning of representation and the matter should be conveyed to the client. A clear understanding on the issue of fees will certainly assure a good working relationship with the client.
